MadeinMycountry Europe (EU)
Europe (Ευρωπη): The name Europe originates from Greek mythology primarily linked to Europa (Ευρωπη), a Phoenician princess abducted by Zeus (Διας) who transformed into a white bull and carried her to Crete. Etymologically it derives from Greek roots “eurys” (ευρυς-wide) and “ops” (ωψ-face/eye), meaning “wide-gazing” (“ευρύ/ανοιχτό βλέμμα”) or “broad of aspect,” (“ευρύχωρη”) describing the landmass.
Early European culture was shaped by farming, the development of metallurgy, and the rise of Mediterranean civilizations. Ancient Greece introduced democracy, philosophy, and theater, while the Roman Empire created enduring political and legal systems.

Europe’s rich history is featuring monuments, museums, and sites like the Palace of Versailles, the Acropolis and the Roman Forum to name a few. Philosophy (from Socrates to Voltaire), literature (Homer, Shakespeare), and scientific inquiry are fundamental to the European identity.
While sharing a “European” identity, the continent boasts immense diversity in languages, music, culinary traditions, and customs. The European Union actively works to protect this “rich and diverse mosaic” of cultural, natural, and archaeological heritage. A specific conception of the individual, emphasizing human rights and personal liberty.

European culture has been continuously shaped by migrations, interactions, and the blending of traditions. European cultural, political, and intellectual, movements have significantly influenced the rest of the world.
According to the United Nations, Europe consists of 44 recognized countries, while around 50 states are often considered part of the continent. Europe is commonly divided into five main geographical regions: Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Central Europe. These regions are defined by shared geography, history, and culture, with additional classifications like the Nordic countries, Baltic states, and British Isles.

North: Normally includes Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark), Finland, and Iceland. Often includes the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) South: Includes countries on the Mediterranean Sea, including Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Malta, and San Marino. East: Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Bulgaria, and the European part of Russia. West: France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Monaco, and sometimes the British Isles.
